On June 12, 2024, the second field demonstration day on agroforestry systems was organized at the Sersour Salah pilot farm in the southern region of the Sétif area, a region highly affected by climate change, particularly drought and rising temperatures in recent years.
The Sersour Salah farm primarily cultivates fruit trees. However, agroforestry systems have not yet been adopted here. To address this, trials were set up at this farm, incorporating legume forage crops such as field peas under olive trees, utilizing both tillage and no-tillage systems. These practices aim to enhance water and soil management. The crops not only improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation but also provide essential feed for livestock, helping the farm manage periods of fodder scarcity. Additionally, they can serve as cover crops for the trees.
This field demonstration day was designed to educate farmers on the benefits of agroforestry systems, especially in light of the climate and socio-economic changes affecting the country.
The event was attended by 20 farmers, 2 engineers, the deputy mayor of Bir Haddada municipality, staff from INRAA Sétif, a representative from the agricultural subdivision of Ain Lahdjar municipality, and one student. Among the attendees, 6 were women.
